Maoists keep cops guessing on congress venue

HYDERABAD: While Maoists are busy making arrangements for holding their Congress in December or January, intelligence officials are working overtime to figure out the venue.

According to sources, the CPI (Maoist) might hold its Congress in Singbhum forest area in Jharkhand in the last week of December or January 2007.

Before the meeting, the party’s various committees—district and state-level—hold their meetings and discuss the party’s strength in their region and give suggestions in the form of resolutions.

“As per our information, the CPI (Maoist) has completed their district committee meetings recently. The state-level committees’—AP State Committee, North Telangana Special Zonal Committee and Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee—meetings are yet to be held,” intelligence sources said.

Police expect the Congress to be held either in the last week of December or early January 2007 as they cannot conduct meetings in the summer due to the lack of natural cover.

Police are extracting details from various sources, particularly about the venue of the Congress.

The Maoists hold their Congress once in three years to discuss various issues including the current political scenario, peace talks with the Andhra Pradesh government and programmes to be taken up to strengthen the party in the next three years.

The Congress is also likely to elect a full-time committee for the party. As of now, a provisional committee under the leadership of Ganapathi is looking after party affairs.

Secretaries of various state units, central committee members and representatives from Peru, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal would take part.

The meeting was to be held in March, 2006 in Abuz Marh forest area Chhattisgarh, but was postponed due to the Salwa Judum campaign and subsequent incidents.
