Ex-naxal Nayeem gives court the slip

HYDERABAD: Alleging threat to his life most probably from the police themselves, a former naxalite wanted in the murder of IPS officer K S Vyas in Hyderabad in 1993 appeared in a Nampalli court on Thursday and fled from the premises.

Incidentally, the accused, Nayeemuddin alias Nayeem, had filed a petition in the same court a day earlier alleging a threat to his life and sought adequate protection.

Appearing in the witness box on Thursday, the former naxalite told second additional metropolitan judge L Kedarachary that he was a diabetic patient and that he needed to urgently attend to a call of nature.

On being excused, Nayeem left the court unescorted and then disappeared. Attempts by Nayeem’scounsel B Krishna Rao to reach his client via cellphone proved futile. The judge waited till 3 pm and when the accused did not surface, issued a non-bailable warrant against him.

Nayeem is accused No. 2 in the murder case in which the IPS officer Vyas, who had established the elite anti-Naxal force Grey Hyenas, was gunned down by unidentified persons when he was jogging at Lal Bahadur Stadium on January 23, 1993.

That the police itself could be after his life gains credence due to the fact that several senior naxal leaders who were accused in the Vyas case, like Nalla Adi Reddy, Puli Anjayya and Mekala Damodar Reddy, were later killed in various alleged encounters.
