Mohanty skips meet & arrest too

Statesman News Service
BERHAMPUR, Sept. 14: Dandapani Mohanty, the convener of the now outlawed, Daman Pratirodh Manch, preferred to stay away from the anti-Salwa Judum seminar organised here today to avoid arrest.
He had stayed away from a similar seminar held in Bhubaneswar yesterday. Speaking on phone, he alleged that the state government was suppressing his fundamental rights by not allowing him to attend a seminar. Mr Mohanty said the state government had banned the Daman Pratirodh Manch, not any person. “Moreover, the case filed by me against the ban of the Daman Pratirodh Manch is pending in the Orissa High Court.
According to him, the state government has no right to threaten him that he would be arrested just because he had attended a seminar which the authorities have termed as pro-Naxalite. Mr Mohanty also alleged that his house was under watch of the police today.
Today, a meeting was organised against Salwa Judum, an initiative by the Chhattisgarh government to counter Maoists, at the Utkal Ashram auditorium in the city. The vice-president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberation (PUCL), Mr Binayak Sen and the president of the Bharatiya Jan Andolan, Mr BD Sharma, attended the seminar along with a cultural troupe from Chhattisgarh.
As a security measure, seven platoons of armed policemen have been deployed in the city to check any possibility of hard core Maoists entering the city. Armed policemen were deployed in large number at all squares leading to the venue.

Gag on sympathisers for pro-Naxal meet on Wednesday

September 14, 2006

BHUBANESWAR: A day before the proposed meeting of the Naxalite sympathisers in the City, the State Government issued a strong warning that anyone, connected with the banned outfits, seen delivering speeches at the meeting site would be arrested.

Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, Home Secretary T K Mishra said the State Government is keeping a watch on the activities of the sympathisers and ready to take action against them if they instigate the people.

Dandapani Mohanty, member of the Salwa Judum Action Council, which has planned the meeting, approached the State Human Rights Commission on Tuesday protesting the detention of Pramod Parida by police. Parida was picked by the police on Monday while distributing pro-council literature at College Square in Cuttack.

Mohanty demanded that the detention of Parida be investigated by the Commission. Apprehending sabotage of the council’s meetings in Bhubaneswar and Berhampur by the State Government, Mohanty urged the Commission to restrain the State Government. He claimed that the council has no links with the CPM (Maoist) and six other outlawed organisations.

Responding to a call given by CPI (Maoist)’s Bashadara Divisional Committee, a group under the banner of Salwa Judum Affected People’s Action Council has decided to mobilise support for the Naxalites and oppose the Salwa Judum.

This is for the first time that any group, sympathising with Left wing ultras, is planning meetings both in Bhubaneswar and Berhampur. As part of its campaign, the symapthisers have called upon ‘democratic’ forces to join hands to oppose Salwa Judum in Chhattisgarh and similar movements in the State.

Ban : Daman Manch to move HC

June 10, 2006

Statesman News Service

BERHAMPUR, June 9: The Daman Pratirodh Manch will use public platforms and the courts of law to challenge the state governments decision to ban it in Orissa along with other frontal organisations of the Naxals. The convenor of the Daman Pratirodh Manch, Mr Dandapani Mohanty, said that their organisation will approach the Orissa High Court to contest the state cabinets decision to ban the organisation in Orissa.

It may be noted that the state cabinet decided to ban the Naxal organisation, CPI-Maoist and seven other organisations that are allegedly frontal organisations of the Naxals. These seven banned frontal organisations are Daman Pratirodh Manch, Kui Lewanga Sangh, Revolutionary Democratic Front, Chasi Mulia Samity, Jan Natya Mandali, Krantikari Kisan Samity and Bal Sangh.

Mr Mohanty said that the Daman Pratirodh Manch is a democratic organisation and that a ban on it is an undemocratic move.

When asked about his future course of action, he said his organisation will also try to garner the support of the oppressed and the intellectuals in the state to press upon the state government to lift the ban on the peoples organisations in the state.

Mr Mohanty said that organisations like Daman Partirodh Manch consider the Naxal problem to be a socio-economic one while the state government considers it to be a law and order problem. He added that these ban orders will be a stumbling block in the path of any possibilities of talks among the Naxals, the pro-people leaders and the state government.

Mr Mohanty declared that the Daman Pratirodh Manch had no links with the Naxals or the CPI-Maoist party. But he accepted that both the Naxals and the Daman Pratirodh Manch are tackling problems related to the downtrodden and tribals in the state. Both have voiced their opposition against the abuse of the downtrodden.

He said both organisations have a similar point of view but they have no connection.
It may be noted that since last year, the Daman Pratirodh Manch has organised massive pro-Naxal rallies in Bhubaneswar and Berhampur. It had organised a pro-Naxal rally last month at Berhampur. The rally was allegedly attended by many pro-Naxal activists of south Orissa.
Police and intelligence sources are happy over the ban decision taken by the state cabinet. According to them, these organisations have definite links with the Maoists.

The Jan Natya Mandali is active in south Orissa. Its members use songs and dances to attract tribals of the remote areas towards the Naxal philosophy. Members of this organisation have also taken part in the rallies of the Daman Pratirodh Manch in Bhubaneswar. Some of them have also been arrested for their Naxal links.

Orissa Bans the CPI(maoist)

June 9, 2006

Friday, June 9, 2006 (Bhubaneshwar):

The Orissa government has banned the CPI-Maoist and seven of their front organizations. The state cabinet took the decision after an escalation in naxal violence.

However the state home secretary has clarified that this will not lead to arrest of the office bearers of the organisations or any raid on their offices.

But they will not be allowed to hold any more rallies or public meetings, although simultaneously the cabinet recommended a rehabilitation package for surrendered extremists.

The rehabilitation package includes cash incentives up to Rs 20,000, allotment of homestead land, bank loan and subsidy and withdrawal of cases involving minor offences.

The seven organisations which have now been declared unlawful in the state are: Daman Pratirodh Manch, Revolutionary Democratic Front, Chasi Mulia Sangh, Jana Natya Mandali, Krantikari Kisan Samiti & Bal Sangam.
